Participation in Government                                                                                                                CIMS

Unit Context:

This unit we just completed was designed to show you the influence of Media on our society and our government. You have learned how the media and interest groups influence discussions that take place in the “public sphere” and ultimately influence the government. We have also identified and applied the seven types of propaganda to see how messages are designed to influence people and their ideas.

Task:

In groups of four a PowerPoint presentation will be created that analyzes an issue in the public sphere.  Some of the issues that your group can choose from include police treatment of suspects, global warming, Government treatment of suspected terrorists, equal rights for L.G.B.T. community, gun control laws, or another issue agreed upon by group (see Mr. Mactas for final approval)

  1. Every member of the group will have to research a specific aspect of the issue.  Here are the following parts of the presentation that MUST be researched

  1. Describe the issue in the public sphere.  Why has this issue been in the public sphere?  Provide a thorough explanation.

  1. Analyze the role of the media in monitoring and influencing this issue.  How has the Media acted?  Has its role been a Gatekeeper, agenda setter, watchdog?  Please Explain.

  1. Identify one interest group that has shown interest in your issue.  Why has this group shown interest? Explain their stance on the issue.

  1. Analyze two pieces of propaganda used in the media which might influence people on your issue.  Which strategy is being used in this propaganda?  Testimonials, Bandwagon, Name calling, Glittering Generalities, Card Stacking, Plain Folks, or Transfer.  Explain.
